Civita di Bagnoregio rises on top of a fragile tuff hill surrounded by the Valle dei calanchi with countless clay ridges shaped by the erosion of waters and winds.
We are in a corner of Tuscia which is 10 km from the Vulsinio volcanic area with Bolsena and touches the Tiber Valley.
Along the tour that starts from Bagnoregio, we stop at the Belvedere S. Francesco Vecchio, so called because there was the ancient convent founded by S. Francesco, in which S. Bonaventura received his first education and from where today a breathtaking view of Civita and the badlands.
The small village of Civita di Bagnoregio really has a fairytale charm that turns out to be a setting of rare beauty for films and events, including the “The Enchanted City” festival of animated films organized in July 2015 was of international resonance.
By the way, in addition to the great Italian films shot in Civita di Bagnoregio, such as Fellini’s “La Strada”, “The Two Colonels” with Totò, the “General Contest” with Sordi, Pinocchio directed by Alberto Sironi, I remind you of the cartoon ” Laputa – The Castle of Heaven ”by Hayao Myazaki.
We continue our journey, crossing the bridge slightly uphill, the only connection between Civita and the surrounding villages: it will be a fun walk, as we will walk over the emptiness of the valley. We will enter the medieval village built on an Etruscan-Roman settlement, through a tunnel, formerly called “Cava” dug into the tuff in the Etruscan era, then we will enter the narrow streets between medieval and Renaissance buildings built in tuff with beautiful basalt portals.
We will see houses with the characteristic “profferlo”, the places of the center of civil and religious power which moved permanently to Bagnoregio after 1695. We will visit the church of San Donato, with its beautiful Romanesque bell tower and the facade dating back to the sixteenth century, where the sixteenth-century image of the Liberating Madonna and the wooden Crucifix of the Donatellian school are venerated, carried in solemn procession every Good Friday.
From the viewpoints of the Civita we will take a look at the overhanging rock face on which the houses, spared from the crumbling of the tufa rock, rest on the perimeter.
